Traditional July festivals

Beyond the major music festivals showcasing local and foreign talent, there are the annual traditional festivals taking place in villages and towns devoted to the island’s produce, local herbs and culture. The Platres Lavender Festival is one of them, and it’s back for its fourth edition with an array of activities over July 6 and 7.

On Saturday, festival-goers will be able to take part in an immersive walk following in the footsteps of well-known writer Daphne Du Maurier, who worshipped Platres and its lavender, and composed most of her famous novel Rebecca while staying in the village. The route will start from the cultural centre of Platres, where the writer has an honorary spot.

The afternoon will be dedicated to alternative lavender remedies and best practices, while on Sunday, July 7, Platres’ main square will turn into a lavender market, offering an experience of wellness, relaxation and gastronomy with lavender.

Later in the month, on July 27, Avgorou village will showcase the area’s main product; the not-so-humble potato. The 7th Pancyprian Potato Festival will again be presenting alternative and traditional recipes with a potato base, all while traditional live music will be playing. The First Municipal School of Avgorou will be hosting once again, and visitors are welcome from 8pm. For only €5 you’ll be able to taste a dozen potato recipes.

Larnaca isn’t falling behind with summer festivals. In fact, for the entire duration of July, the annual Larnaca Festival is on – a top-tier cultural programme, with performances at various venues, which was awarded the EFI Label in 2015-2016 as one of Europe’s finest festivals. This year’s performances of music and theatre will take place at Kition archaeological site, Pattichion Municipal Amphitheatre, Kamares aqueduct and the Medieval Fort, and will include concerts by big-name artists, adaptations of ancient Greek drama, comedy, and performances by music ensembles.

Two final notes: a ‘koupepia’ festival will be on tomorrow in Avdimou village, celebrating the famous stuffed vine leaves, while local dairy products will be the theme of ‘I Giorti tou Voskou’ (‘The Shepherd’s Festival’) in Pachna village on July 7.
