Transport ministry investigating driver after girl injured on school bus (Updated)
The ministry of transport is investigating how a schoolgirl was injured when her bag got caught in the door of a bus as she disembarked on Tuesday.
Transport Minister Yiannis Karousos contacted the parents personally to find out about the girl’s health and the circumstances under which the accident occurred.
The 14-year-old girl was on her way home from Dherynia, from where she took a bus home to Sotira after school.
According to her parents, she was the last to leave the bus.
When the driver closed the door, her bag reportedly got caught and she was dragged along after the bus driver pulled away at a slow speed.
After 20 or 30 metres the driver of a car behind the bus signalled to the bus driver to stop and open the door.
The teenager was taken to Famagusta general hospital and treated for bruises on her legs.
The driver was asked by police to give an explanation.
The department of road transport and the department of public transport have started to check the professional competence of the driver, the suitability of the bus, the conditions under which the incident took place and the daily transportation of children by this bus.
“The primary concern of the Ministry of Transport is the safe transportation of passengers by public transport, particularly of pupils on school buses,” the ministry’s statement said.
